For this week's #Armandospicks, our manager, Armando Ortega, has chosen an outstanding Californian Cabernet Sauvignon.
2019 Ghost Block Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
OAKVILLE · NAPA VALLEY
The Pelissa family has owned and farmed vineyards in Napa Valley for over 119 years. As growers and land stewards, their hearts will always be in the vineyards, where the life of wine begins.
All 635 acres of their estate's grapes are 100% certified organically-farmed. Ghost Block Estate Wines, comprised of three wine brands, is their way of taking grape-growing one step further. Utilizing fruit from the family's estate vineyards in the prized Oakville and Yountville Appellations, they create high-quality Napa Valley wines that are accessible to everyone. Each brand – Ghost Block, Oakville Winery and Elizabeth Rose – has its own winemaker, vineyard designation, and identity. What they possess in common is an unwavering commitment to quality, a farming legacy that has lasted over a century, and the Pelissa family’s longtime, unique heritage in Napa Valley.
In 1877 the Oakville Winery became the 9th bonded winery in California, and today, this same winery is the home of the Pelissa family's Napa Wine Company, where all of their organically-grown wines are made. It holds pride of place is being the only single-digit bonded winery still in existence in California, and the Oakville Winery wines pay homage to this history and heritage.
Under the direction of Winemaker Lynn Watanabe, the impeccably-made Oakville Winery Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are sourced primarily from the Pelissa Vineyard directly behind the winery in the heart of the acclaimed Oakville AVA.
The 2019 Ghost Block Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of fruit sourced from our family-owned and organically farmed Rock Cairn vineyard. This property is characterized by deep, gravelly loam soil with a western exposure. The vines produce highly concentrated fruit late in the season and are typically the last picks of our harvest. Five blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon separated by age reside on this site, ranging from 5- to 35-year-old plantings. This provides an opportunity for capturing characteristics that are specific to vine age, creating a perfect blend to express this valuable site. In this particular vintage, we have incorporated fruit from two of our other estate vineyards in Yountville and Oakville to complement this complex wine.
Our 2019 vintage embodies the beauty of Oakville, with lovely aromas of blackberry and ripe plum along with sultry tones of dusty earth and leather with hints of sweet bay leaf and baking spices. On the palate, alluring layers of cassis, boysenberry, and black cherry are met with subtle notes of tobacco leaf. The refined, beautifully integrated tannins create a harmonious experience that fills out your palate completely ending with a long, elegant finish that leaves you with one word...exceptional.
