Staff Picks for September

As Wallace Stegner says in Angle of Repose,

"That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air." It certainly felt like Autumn for a few days this past week.

At Leary's Liquor Cabinet we look forward to Autumn. Visitors like Vittorio Marianecci, USA Brand Manager for ZENATO Winery drop by to say hello and introduce us to new products. Autumn means harvest, the next vintage, the return of old favorites, the introduction of new favorites and a year closer to the perfect time to drink that perfect wine. Or, maybe this is the year to drink it?

We've got some new items to share with you this week, and some flavored vodkas too.

Lefty has Maeli Rosso 2016.

The winemaker tasting notes describe the 2016 vintage as:

Vivid ruby red color. The wine presents a bouquet profoundly of cherry, ripe fruit and balsamic spice. On the palate it is rich and potently warm with a perfectly balancedacidity and minerality that conveys the volcanic nuances of the terrain. Sweet and silky tannins with an intense and persistent aftertaste.

Armando and Vittorio have Zenato Valpolicella Superiore Ripassa 2015.

The winemaker tasting notes are:

This wine is closely connected to the greatest wine of Valpolicella: Amarone. After pressing the dried grapes from which Amarone is made, the Valpolicella wine is passed over the still warm marc of Amarone. A second alcoholic fermentation begins which increases the alcoholic content and the wine becomes richer in color, bouquet. Excellent companion to game dishes, grilled meat and roasts, salami and aged cheeses.

Blend: 85% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta

James Suckling 94 Points: "This is so refined and focused with layers of fruit and ultra-fine tannins. Plenty of chocolate and spice, too. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a focused finish. Drink or hold. #62 of 100 Best Wines Under $30"

Wine Spectator 90 Points: "This elegant red is well-balanced, layering light, creamy tannins and flavors of plumped cherry, anise and orange peel in a medium-bodied frame. A hint of graphite-laced mineral lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2024."

Berardo Chianti Classico Reserva 2015

Wine Advocate 91 Points: "The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo exhibits a soft and delicate personality that is slightly atypical for this warm and sunny vintage and for the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone that is known for more robust interpretations. Instead, this wine exhibits fine silkiness with aromas of wild berry, spice, crushed stone and even a touch of grilled herb or green olive. There is a drying note on the bouquet that recalls the crushed rocks and limestone clay soils of Chianti Classico. Some 60,000 bottles were made. You get great value here."

James Suckling Notes 98 Points: "The floral aromas are so enticing with rose petals and lavender, which follow through to a full body with beautiful density of fruit. A long and complete finish. The best Chianti Classico ever made here in living memory. Even better than the 1961. Drink or hold."

Feudi Del Pisciotto

Wine Spectator 91 Points: “A well-focused, rich red in a balanced, medium bodied frame, this offers a subtle underpinning of tarry mineral notes layered over light, sculpted tannins and flavors of mulberry and dried fig, with hints of herbes de Provence and mocha. Drink now through 2025. 1,166 cases made.”

James Suckling 88 Points: “Very sweet blackberry aroma (from slightly overripe fruit), moderate depth and softness that makes it easy to drink. Rather obvious, though. Drink now.” Vinous 91 Points: “Good medium red-ruby. Deeply pitched, liqueur-like aromas of red cherry nectar, cocoa, coffee, smoke, and nuts, with a balsamic nuance adding appeal. Then also rich in the mouth, but livelier and fresher than the nose, with the sappy, seamless raspberry and strawberry flavors nicely framed by powdery tannins. Insidiously sweet and filled in, the serious fine-grained tannins saturate the cheek and gums, closing long with a peppery element.”

Duckhorn Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017

2017 produced a powerful and sophisticated crop of Chardonnays from Napa Valley with attractive bouquets of nectarine, yellow plum, pineapple upside-down cake, and sweet spices. On the palate, zesty acidity and an underlying silkiness add complexity and distinction, with French oak-inspired hints of vanilla, sugared dough and cloves.

The winemaker notes are: "The fantastic 2017 growing season yielded an intense and complex expression of Napa Valley Chardonnay, with alluring aromas of nectarine, yellow plum, pineapple upsidedown cake, and sweet spices. On the palate, zesty acidity and an underlying silkiness add depth and nuance, with French oak-inspired hints of vanilla, sweet dough and clove framing the generous fruit.

Wilfred Wong, 91 Points: "This wine is generous without sacrificing purity or style. Its aromas and flavors of dried peach, apple, and oak accents are perfectly balanced. Pair it with shellfish in a decadent cream sauce."

Michael David 6th Sense Syrah 2017 Lodi Appellation

The winemaker notes are: "Primarily sourced from the Phillips family vineyard located just east of the winery, the 2017 vintage has aromas of butterscotch and spice, with just a hint of tobacco and leather. Black cherry, fig and sarsaparilla flavors stand out in this lush, medium-bodied wine."

Wine Enthusiast 91 points: 'This lavish wine matches loud oak spice on the nose with equally bold jammy fruit on the full palate, without the tannins becoming too oppressive. It has aromas of vanilla, nutmeg and toasted bread plus tasty blackberry, blueberry and dark-chocolate flavors."

The winemaker notes are: "Bright and vibrant in the glass, our Sauvignon Blanc offers fragrant white blossoms on the nose, framed by a refreshing palate of melon, white peach, lemon curd and ripe citrus.Try it with briny oysters or a summer salad topped with tangy goat cheese.

Wine Enthusiast 88 Points: "Appealing and refreshing, this medium-bodied wine combines bright and fresh citrus and apple aromas with crisp, fairly ripe fruit flavors and lively acidity for good balance."

Tasting Panel 90 Points: "Light and ripe, this Sauv Blanc is energetic and bright. White grapefruit and a line of minerality keep it geared up while making it a magical pairing with seafood and appetizers. White peach is perky on the finish."
