A Count's Zeal For Modernization and Distinction
This week, for #Armandospicks, our store manager Armando has chosen another exceptional wine from the Boisset Collection, Buena Vista Chateau Buena Vista Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018.
Buena Vista Winery has a lush, delightful tradition as the first exceptional and undoubtedly the most imaginative of the California wineries.
The self-proclaimed Count Agoston Haraszthy founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857, and its history is as vibrant as it is proud. His grand vision was to produce fine wine in Sonoma, and Buena Vista was his vinicultural testing ground.
Count Agoston Haraszthy created the first gravity-flow winery in California and quarried the first wine caves. His innovation and zeal blazed the way for the use of Redwood barrels in aging and fermenting wines.
The Count’s enthusiasm for modernization and distinction led to California’s first exceptional winery and the development of the California wine world of today.
Under Winemaker Brian Maloney, Buena Vista wines are being driven to greater heights, including the reintroduction of Sonoma and Napa Valley, in a nod to the vineyard's heritage.
Buena Vista joined the Boisset Collection in May 2011. Today, Proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset is returning Buena Vista to its original glory with the complete restoration and re-opening of the champagne cellars, which have been unavailable to the public for over 20 years.
Grapes for this 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested primarily from three vineyards across Napa Valley between October 18 and November 6. The Founders Ranch 1875, located in St. Helena, lends mid-palate and generosity to the wine while, the Chateau Dallage Vineyard in Oak Knoll, provides texture and plushness. The tannic backbone comes from grapes in the Juliana Vineyard located in the eastern hills of Napa.
An enticing bouquet of blackberry and plum with notes of bay leaf spring from the glass. This is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with blended flavors of blueberry, black currant, and hints of cedar spice. Smooth and structured tannins with balanced acidity lead to a long and juicy finish.
This wine shows depth and balance, offering a classic nose of ripe dark fruit, vanilla and eucalyptus. Some crushed-stone minerality, too. Full-bodied and dense with impressive concentration, viscous tannins, and bright acidity. Fresh and juicy aftertaste. Lovely now, but better in 2023.

The 2018 Chateau Buena Vista Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon shows excellent and persistent layers on the palate. This wine exhibits attractive aromas and flavors of dried herbs, black fruit, and oak.
Enjoy it with the first cut of a prime rib.
