40 miles north of San Francisco and 40 miles inland is wine-drinking country. What the Merritt Parkway in New England is to leaf-peepers, Route 128 in California is to wine lovers. It runs from the Mendocino coast to the Sacramento Valley, through the state's Wine Country.

There are 45,275 acres (18,300 hectares) of vineyards (AVA's) in Napa Valley. St. Helena is one of them.

Situated on the narrow valley floor, basking in the reflected heat from the western hills, with little fog or wind, and at an elevation of 100-700 feet, St. Helena often enjoys summer temperatures in the mid-’90s.

The varietals here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Notice that Cabernet Sauvignon is first on the list. Fluvial soil is the terroir here, meaning that the terrain has inherited minerals from a deep river or stream.

Estate History

No winery more thoroughly embodies the timeless appeal and seductive flavor of Napa Valley than Beringer Vineyards, Napa’s benchmark producer since its establishment in 1876. As Napa's oldest continuously operating winery, Beringer is an American wine icon built on 140 years of winemaking tradition. Visitors are welcome to explore the expansive property, which was designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

In 1883, Frederick Beringer began construction of the 17-room Rhine House mansion—a re-creation of the family home located on the Rhine River in Germany. The extraordinary edifice sparkles with original Belgian Art Nouveau stained glass and carved woodwork. Frederick's Rhine House is the center of Beringer’s reserve and library tastings, and guests can enjoy a glass of wine while relaxing in Frederick’s library or on his porch, overlooking expansive lawns and lush gardens. As a pioneer in the industry, Beringer has the distinction of being the first and only winery in the world to have both a white and a red wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator (1986 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1994 Private Reserve Chardonnay--the first time a white wine garnered this coveted award). In its 140 years of operation, Beringer has had only eight chief winemakers. Today, Winemaker Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of the founder, continues the exemplary Beringer winemaking legacy of crafting wines that highlight the best of Napa Valley’s many exemplary terroirs. Beringer is the place to visit for those who wish to experience the unique history and the terroir of Napa Valley.

Jammy red plum and cherry highlight a soft, supple palate that presents as lush and velvety—a reflection of its full-bodied roundedness and rich style. The price point is fair and over-delivers on the wine's broad appeal. Virginie Boone

This has a gutsy edge to the mix of red and black currant paste flavors, which mix with licorice and bramble accents. With an extracted feel on the finish thanks to a toothy plum skin note, this shows power and energy, but not the refinement to knit fully. Best from 2021 through 2027. 2,694 cases made.

For Napa Valley’s Beringer, excellence is all in the family. Their Distinction Series Cabernet 2017 is made by the great-great-grandson of Beringer’s founder—and it’s ready to add distinction to your cellar! Excellence must run in the family, because this 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet practically jumps out of the glass and into your memory, and stays there for a good long while after the last drop is gone from the glass!
