Great wine from great sites allowed to express themselves naturally.

This week, #Fidelspicks include two outstanding wines from the Boisset Collection, DeLoach Russian River Chardonnay 2019 and DeLoach Russian River Pinot Noir 2019.

Estate History

In 2003 the Boisset family purchased DeLoach Vineyards. Almost immediately, the Boisset team knew they faced a challenge, but one worthy of pursuit.

The vineyard’s prime location is one of the first things visitors see upon arriving at the winery. Decades of traditional chemical cultivation had left the soil tired and drained. Repairing the soil was an opportunity for Jean-Charles Boisset and his team, to demonstrate their pledge to change the industry from the roots up, which is what they did, converting the 17-acre estate to organic and biodynamic farming practices.

Employing the methodologies of Burgundian winemaking in the Russian River Valley, which Boisset held to be California’s most expressive terroir for nurturing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the team has piloted sustainable, biodynamic farming at DeLoach since 2003. With the knowledge and the leadership of the Boisset family, DeLoach has become a certified organic and biodynamic estate vineyard. Wine & Spirits magazine has named DeLoach Vineyards a Top 100 Winery twelve times.

Vineyard Notes

Utilizing the age-old agricultural technique of allowing the land to go fallow, nature did the job of restoring nutrients to the soil. However, the Boisset team took it one step further. Each cover crop they planted added even more nutrients to the soil, enhancing the success of future crops and eventually the vines that produced award-winning wines.

Sophie Drucker, a grower at DeLoach, puts it best;

“We strive to nourish and enhance the biodiversity of the Deloach Estate vineyard. This comprehensive approach to our vineyards allows the true nature of this exquisite terroir to shine through in the wine.”

2019 Vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Heavy spring rains enriched the soils and delayed bud break by a few weeks. A heat spike in June, followed by warm weather, brought even veraison throughout the vineyards. A cooling trend and touch of rain in mid-September created ideal conditions for the 2019 harvest which is considered a near-perfect vintage.
