2017 Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon St. Supéry Estate from Napa Valley, California

$39.99

Estate History

St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery is located in the Rutherford sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. It specializes in estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc and has been a fixture on Napa's famous Highway 29 since 1989.

Proprietor Robert Skalli came to Napa Valley from Corsica, where his grandparents founded Terra Vecchi's winery. In 1982, he purchased the Dollarhide estate, a 1500 acre cattle ranch in the northeast corner of Napa Valley. He also purchased 56 acres in Rutherford, where the winery was built and still stands today. The first vintage of St. Supéry was released in 1989. The Skalli family sold their Napa Valley holdings to fashion giant Chanel in 2015.

Today, the Dollarhide Ranch is planted with 500 acres of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with several other Bordeaux varieties and a small parcel of Chardonnay. The smaller Rutherford property produced the Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

Ranging from 600 to 1100 feet above sea level, with a wealth of different soil types, the variance of the property's terroir provides different flavor profiles in each block, allowing for complexity in the final blends. St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery produce 100% estate-grown, certified Napa Green wines, focusing on sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, and additional red Bordeaux varietals.

Tasting Notes

2017 Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery is a 100% Estate Grown, sustainably farmed winery located in the renowned Rutherford growing region in the heart of Napa Valley.

A structured yet elegant cabernet sauvignon with aromas of blackberry, black currant, and cassis combined with dark cocoa and toasted oak. On the palate, flavors of plum, raspberry, and blackberry compote mingle with attractive elements of mocha and toasted barrel maturation.

Vintage Notes

An extreme winter in 2017 left our lakes full, which was welcome after several dry years. This groundwater primed the vineyards for what turned out to be another excellent harvest. Early spring saw lovely days, with May quickly warming up.

The summer experienced several heat spells and caused the vineyards to accelerate their ripening while conditions remained dry. Cabernet Sauvignon harvest kicked off on September 20, 2017. In the cool morning hours, the fruit was hand-harvested and brought to the winery in half-ton bins.

The clusters were sorted by hand at the winery, then by individual berries to ensure that only ideal grapes were chosen. These berries were delivered to a fermenter for a period of resting on skins.

Warm fermentation temperatures were encouraged along with gentle cap maceration to achieve the desired color and structure before an extended maceration time on skins before final pressing. The wine was transferred directly to the barrel for 20 months of maturation.

Critical Acclaim

James Suckling

91 Points

A firm, silky red with soft, tight tannins that nicely frame this juicy and delicious red with currant and berry character. Not the biggest wine, but thoroughly delicious already. Drink or hold.

Jeb Dunnuck

90 Points

The value-priced 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is also well done in this vintage, and it has to be one of the better efforts under $50. Lots of mulled dark fruits, dried herbs, lead pencil, and earth emerge from this plump, spicy, character-filled effort. It's well worth drinking and will keep for a decade.

Wilfred Wong

90 Points

The 2017 St. Supéry Cabernet Sauvignon is resolute in showing how excellent the Rutherford AVA performs. This wine exhibits picture-perfect aromas and flavors of black fruit and a light touch of oak. Pair it with a juicy, grilled ribeye.

Wine Enthusiast

90 Points

Dark berry dominates a waxy texture in this soft, gently tannic wine—a likably approachable and value-minded offering that delivers full flavor within an elegant frame.

Food Pairing

Cabernet Miso Braised Pork Belly. Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Heirloom Tomatoes, or a juicy, grilled ribeye.
